NIIN 01-441-9789
Example: 5305-01-441-9789, SCREW,MACHINE. An NSN is 13 digits: the four-digit Federal Supply Class (FSC) followed by the nine-digit
National Item Identification Number (NIIN).
FSC
Federal Supply Class
The first four digits place
the item in a class of similar items. The first two digits are the Federal Supply Group (FSG), the broad category. There
are 80 groups covering nearly every type of property. The third and fourth digits narrow it to a specific type. The FSC
can change if an item is reclassified.
NIIN
National Item Identification Number
The last
nine digits, made of a two-digit NCB code and a seven-digit item number. The NIIN identifies the item: the FSC adds its
classification, and the NIIN stays the same even if the FSC changes. You can search NSN Index by NIIN alone.
NCB code
NATO Codification Bureau code
The first two
digits of the NIIN are the code of the NATO Codification Bureau that assigned the number, which shows the country that
first catalogued the item. It is not the country of manufacture. The United States uses 00 and 01. Other examples are 12
for Germany, 14 for France, 20 and 21 for Canada, 66 for Australia and 99 for the United Kingdom.
Item number
Seven-digit item number
The remaining
seven digits are assigned in sequence to make each NSN unique. They have no meaning on their own.
